Lesson 3.
Erikson's Theory of Psychological Development
- Hope: Trust vs. Mistrust (oral-sensory, infancy, 0–2 years)-children
develop a sense of trust when caregivers provide reliability, care and
affection.
- Will:
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (early childhood, 2–4
years)- children need to develop a sense of personal control over physical
skill and a sense of independence.
- Purpose:
Initiative vs. Guilt (locomotor-genital, preschool, 4–5
years)-children needs to begin asserting control and power over the
environment.
- Competence:
Industry vs. Inferiority (latency, school age, 5–12
years)-children need to cope with new social and academic demands.
- Fidelity:
Identity vs. Role Confusion (adolescence, 13–19
years)-teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity.
- Love:
Intimacy vs. Isolation (early adulthood, 20-39 years)-young adults need
to form intimate, loving relationships with other people.
- Care:
Generativity vs. Stagnation (adulthood, 40–64
years)-adults need to create or nurture thing that will out last them,
often by having children or creating a positive change that benefit other
people.
- Wisdom:
Ego Integrity vs. Despair (maturity, 65 – death)-older
adults needs to look back on life and feel a sense of fulfillment. Success
at this stage leads to feelings of wisdom while failure results in regret,
bitterness and despair.
